AS AFRICA’S SOCIAL TIES LOOSEN, TURN TO INSURANCE AS A SAFEGUARD.
It is now a well known fact that the close knit, communal relations which characterized many parts of Africa for centuries have been steadily eroded by the relentless march of modernisation, urbanisation as well as the increased burden of surviving under the harsh economies that are a reality in many modern day African societies. In times past, when most of the population lived in smaller, simpler ancestral villages, it was much easier to sustain a communal and fraternal way of life especially as most villagers were frequently related to each other. This sense of shared history and ancestry as well as the experiences of living and surviving together in small close knit communities fostered the spirit of oneness and a strong desire to “look out for each other”.
In the past, it was commonplace and indeed expected for individuals to assist members of their immediate and extended family financially as well as for housing, education and other needs.
However, the reality is that today, much of that assistance has been to a large extent eliminated or significantly reduced in many cases. Today, a growing percentage of the African population dwells in urban areas; facing challenges which are unique to urban areas and which are non – existent in the traditional rural environments. Urban lifestlyes are largely incompatible with the communal existence that is made possible by living in rural areas.
Nowadays, individuals struggle with rising medical expenses, tuition, day-to-day living costs, funeral expenses etc, a lot of individuals are unduly stressed in trying to keep up with these and other costs especially in a depressed economy.
The fact is that taking out appropriate insurance cover can lighten the burden and make it much easier to defray these costs bringing the sought after peace of mind needed for carrying on with life.
Will insurance companies meet their obligations when called upon to do so?
